What is an "oratory" and why is it important?
an oratory is a room for prayer, from the Latin orare, to pray and is most commonly used to refer to a small chapel. Most Americans don't have the luxury of being able to visit a church or chapel daily, this is why Catholic home oratories/prayer spaces are growing in popularity, especially as the Catholic Church faces more pressures from modern society.
Though, your prayer space doesn't have to be an entire room. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, “For personal prayer, this can be a ‘prayer corner’ with the Sacred Scriptures and icons, in order to be there, in secret, before our Father. In a Christian family, this kind of little oratory fosters prayer in common.” (CCC 1691)
It is a place where you or the members of your family can spend time in prayer, meditation, or learning more about the Faith.
